Hand Sewing Stitches

      In this article, I will tell you about the various models of hand stitching. Sometimes we need a hand stitches to embroider, make a seam application, or fix minor damage clothing. Here is an example of hand stitching that I made and I will explain the function of each.

  • Backstitch : Hand sewing that have strong properties and versatile stitch. Backstitch used for seams, topstitching, handpicked zippers, fix minor damage clothing. Backstitch is composed of four types, namely Even Backstitch, Backstitch Half, Pickstitch, and Prickstitch. It worked Horizontaly or Verticaly.
  • Cross Stitch : Hand sewing that used for decorative stitch or seam application. It worked top to bottom and back up to the top.
  • Chainstitch : The chainstitch used for decorative stitch or seam application. It worked right to left.
  • Fagoting Stitch : Fagoting stitch same like the chainstitch. It used for decorative stitch or seam application. It worked Left to right diagonally.
  • Basting  : The Basting stitch is used to temporarily hold together two or more fabrics. The Basting stitch is composed of three types, namely Even Basting, Uneven Basting, and Diagonal Basting
  • Buttonhole Stitch : Buttonhole stitch is used to seams, fix minor damage clothing. It worked top to bottom.
  • Featherstitch : Hand sewing that used for decorative stitch or seam application.
      From the types of hand stitching above, we can apply it into forms that look different as the picture below.

      In the application on repairing damaged clothes, Hemming Stitches are usually used. The types that belong to the hemming stitches are:
  • Slant Hemming Stitch
  • Vertical Hemming Stitch
  • Uneven Slipstitch
  • Catchstitch
  • Blind-Hem Stitch
  • Blind Catchstitch
  • Overcast Stitch
  • Overhand Stitch
      Besides that, there are also Whipstitch. Whipstitch is overhand stitch is used to join two finished edges. It usually used to hemming fabrics.
